Type of Light Source: Suspended direct-indirect luminaires with fluorescent lamps + natural light

Change in Color: All of the fabric samples appear have a red tint

Subjective Reaction: The samples seem dingy and less attractive

Residence:

Type of Light Source: Recessed direct luminaire with halogen lamp + free-standing indirect "lamp" with fluorescent lamp + natural light

Change in Color: The fabric samples seem to have a slightly yellow tint and are "deeper" in their colors.

Subjective Reaction: The texture and patterns within the fabrics are very visible and I find the fabric samples appealing under this lighting

Retail Store:

Type of Light Source: Recessed, lensed, direct luminaire with fluorescent lamps

Change in Color: The fabric samples have taken on a tan tint

Subjective Reaction: The samples appear very hazy and textures are barely noticeable despite the increase in brightness

Grocery Store:

Type of Light Source: Suspended high-bay, open, direct luminaire with HID lamp

Change in Color: The colors of the fabrics all seem to be washed out and pale. The white fabric is the brightest and "whitest" it has been.

Subjective Reaction: I find the fabric samples unattractive under this lighting because I tend to appreciate the saturation of color, which the samples are lacking

lighting evaluation: critique room.

The critique room is located on the fourth floor of the Gatewood Studio Arts Building and is primarily used as a public, multi-use space for Interior Architecture classes, meetings, presentations, critique evaluations, etc. The room is adorned with white tack-board walls, track lighting that is situated along the perimeter of the room, and window slits that appear behind columns in the four corners of the room, allowing you to view the fourth year’s space surrounding the critique room. An open ceiling plane gives the critic room its distinctive and serene quality. Natural light floods the space through translucent windows on the roof allowing for general lighting during the day. However, the lack of consistent daylight throughout each day sometimes poses an issue, especially when using the space for drawing classes. The dark polished concrete floors of the room help to contain the light and prevent glaring in the space. The layout of the critique room is flexible considering it is an open space with easily rearranged chairs to face any direction. The only stationary aspect of the space is the chalkboard, which is seldom used. The critique room is large enough to comfortably contain each year of the IARC students (first year, second year, third year, or fourth year) at a time, and the size of the space is rarely brought up as an area of concern. An overall impression of the critique room is that it is an open, airy, important, and inviting space due to the simplistic features, location, and natural lighting.

^ The three images above are of light-emitting, fiber-optic wallpaper that I immediately fell inlove with. I appreciate the nontraditional, yet functional use of lighting.

^ The next three images seen above were chosen due to their crisp, clean and very intentional application of simple lighting that adds a sense of sophistication to the spaces. I especially enjoyed the "Torn Lighting" concept by Billy May, allowing LED lights to seep in from the walls.

^ "Light Graffiti" is a new artistic expression that has begun to grasp the attention of many, including myself. An abstract form of light graffiti is seen in the bottom two images of this set, produced by the light that has been projected or cast upon the surfaces.

^ With sustainable design as a tenet of 21st century designers, I admire the natural light that is flooding the spaces in the images seen above. The pure natural light surely eliminates the need for artificial, energy-guzzling lighting during the day.

^ This last set of images are on display because I find the light within each of them very unique and interesting. The top two images of the set are of a club created out of illuminated recycled crates. The next image is a facade at the New National Lbrary in Belarus, saturated with colorful LEDs. I enjoyed the next image of a retail store in China due to it's monochromatic scheme highlighted by very intentional lighting. The last image is that of a digital clock that also serves as the lighting within the room... very original.
